A short documentary by award-winning French filmmaker Emmanuel Rondeau follows a dedicated team of conservationists working to reinvigorate Spain’s “Iberian Highlands”, a mountainous area northeast of Madrid where land abandonment and depopulation has been an ongoing trend since the 1960s.
The film focuses on the translocation of 10 Przewalski's horses from the Monts D'Azur Biological Reserve in France to the Iberian Highlands in May 2023, and the wider efforts of the Rewilding Spain team to recover nature and inspire communities across the landscape.
The documentary was produced by Rewilding Europe, a Europe-wide network of rewilding initiatives that Rewilding Spain is a part of. Aside from highlighting the natural beauty of the Iberian Highlands, it shows how nature restoration, the reintroduction of wildlife, partnerships and entrepreneurship can work hand in hand to help breathe new life into an entire region. It allows viewers to see the potential rewilding has to improve the condition of our environment and people’s lives.
The Fundación Española de Renaturalización, also known as Rewilding Spain, was founded in 2020 to work towards the recovery of nature and wildlife and the conservation of wild landscapes in Spain for the benefit of biodiversity and people since 2020. Through its wider partnership with Rewilding Europe, Cartier for Nature has been among the earliest supporters of the programme.
